The company Cisco was founded in December 1984 by Leonard Bosack. He used to be in charge of the Stanford University computer science departments computers. The company name was uniquely created due to the fact the company was based out of the bay area. So they took the city name San Francisco and a few engineers thought it would be a neat idea to just take the Cisco. Then they wanted to keep it lower case like the city name. Another creative idea they had was the logo, it is intended to replicate the 2 towers of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Even though Cisco was not the very 1st company to develop and sell dedicated network nodes. They were actually the 1st to sell commercially successful routers supporting multiple network protocols. In the early years with the CPU based architecture of their devices coupled with flexibility of operating system. The IOS allowed them to keep up with evolving technology needs by means of frequent software upgrades. The more popular models of that time such as Cisco 2500 managed to stay in production for almost a decade virtually unchanged. That is an extreme rarity in this high tech industry. Although they were strongly rooted in the enterprise environment, the company was quick to capture the emerging service provider environment. This allowed them to enter into the SP market with new, high capacity product lines such as Cisco 7000 and 8500 brands.
In 1999 they became a major provider of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) to enterprises. They began looking to move into the home user market through its acquisition of Scientific Atlanta. By acquiring Scientific Atlanta they now can provide VOIP equipment to cable service providers such as Time Warner, Cablevision, Rodgers Communications and UPC to name a few. The acquisition of Linksys in 2003 was fantastic because they had already partnered with companies such as Skype, Microsoft and Yahoo to integrate consumer VOIP services with their wireless and cordless phones.
